Student Life

St Peter Chanel/Hato Petera Kaniera provides education aligned to the Marist Charism and tikanga Māori of its local iwi. Most students are Māori and many families whakapapa to Ngāti Kapumanawawhiti, a hapū of Ngāti Raukawa who hold mana whenua. Core school values are Whakapono, Whanaungatanga, Aroha, Rangimārie and manaakitanga.

All students are provided with some instruction in te reo Maori. Many staff and trustees have long standing and strong connections with the school and the community.

The student experience includes a diverse range of curricula, extracurricular activities and opportunities to bond as a community. We offer many options for our students to choose from, making them directly involved in designing their own educational path.

Our Environment

Te Kura o Hato Petera Kaniera is an environmentally friendly kura. We have a spiritual, physical, mental and social connection to the land, rivers and streams.

"We enjoyed making our worm farm and our compost bin. We use worm pee, worm castings and compost to feed our maara kai."

Pukekaraka

Pukekaraka is the name of the whenua and puke that our kura, church and Te Marae o Hine are situated on.

Mangapouri

We are fortunate to have part of our awa meandering through our kura grounds. Our tamariki learn how they can help our awa through planting, water quality testing and monitoring of life in and around our awa.

Otaki Beach

"One of our favourite places is exploring and connecting with Hine-Moana. Mukukai is our kaitiaki. We love discovering marine life, participating in beach-based activities and learning about the importance of protecting our environment."
